Pfizer has embraced Enterprise Architecture as business as usual. Corporate Modeler is the authoritative source for creation and distribution of process and related information such as location, organization, high level information spanning the majority of Pfizer from high level to very detailed level.

Challenge

Various business groups have been using Corporate Modeler to model their processes. One of the first drivers was the need to reduce the complexity of the IT environment which is costly to build and maintain. Additionally a desire existed to more intimately tie the applications to the processes they support, regardless of the organizational structure. Overall, the challenge is to have processes that are compliant, consistent and connected.

Solution

Corporate Modeler, Publisher, Link Packs, and the ITIL framework. We equipped approximately 150 colleagues with licenses, 60% in the business and the balance from Information Technology

  • Corporate Modeler has been used within the Business & Information Architecture group since 2003 to capture high level processes and their relationship to information, applications, and artefact
  • Several small successes led to more engagements and more successes
  • Currently modelling the majority of Pfizer processes and data, engaged in a number of company-wide initiatives
  • In the process of producing Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions directly from the repository.

Results

The ability to capture objects, pertinent meta data, and relationships was critical for re-use and analysis. Once a user is proficient, the ability to capture the information and easily publish it for end-user consumption impressed the business. Results from modelling efforts include new applications and components, reorganization, process engineering, and better data management – all leading to a more efficient and effective organization. Modelling for Service Oriented Architecture components and business process management, pose new challenges.
